“Moin!” is a common greeting in northern Germany, originating in the maritime areas of Northern Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The term is derived from the Frisian and Low German word “moien” which means “good.” One theory is that the combination “moien Dag” (Good Day) was then shortened to “Moin” without the word “day.” Another suggestion is that “Moin” could be a mixture of “mo(o)i” and “Morgen” (Morning) - try saying “mooien Morgen” quickly without it just sounding like “Moin Moin!”
Some believe saying it twice - “Moin Moin!” is more polite, while others say it simply shows you’re in a very good mood.
